On November 7, 2023, WordPress 6.4 “Shirley” was released to the public.
With it comes a new default theme named Twenty Twenty-Four, over 100 performance-related updates and a bunch of new features, mentioned in the release notes.
One particular note states that PHP 8.1 or 8.2 are now recommended for use with WordPress 6.4. This is of particular interest as many sites we manage couldn’t previously update to PHP 8 due to incompatibilities with various plugins although WordPress has quietly supported PHP 8.x for some time. This update should give plugin developers the nudge they need to finally update their code.
We’ll be rolling out updating to PHP 8.2 on WordPress sites that we manage or support during our monthly maintenance where possible.
